The BookShanty Gold is an historical novel which will immerse you in a wild ride of discovery, romance, and bravery. Not without terror, its heart is a story of character. Thirteen-year-old Mary Boland trusts a stranger and boards a ship to Boston, leaving behind her beloved Ireland. With her mother dead from the famine and her “da” disappeared in the mists of New England, Mary is desperate. This is her only chance. With peril at every turn, Mary needs a comrade. She finds him in African slave boy, Kamua Okafor, who becomes her ally in survival. The two teens combine Celtic and African superstitions to defeat the evil crew, save the starving Irish in the hold and create a new life in Boston. The author’s wish is to demonstrate to today’s young people that not all heroes exist in a dystopian future. Some were our ancestors. Shanty Gold is available in all digital formats and at local bookstores. |

Short BiographyJeanne Charters is a historical fiction author who follows her debut novel, Shanty Gold, with two more books based on female Irish immigrants’ experiences in coming to America. Lace Curtain is available now and Silk Stocking will be published by Rogue Phoenix Press. In this Irish-American trilogy, Jeanne’s heroines, Mary Boland, Nellie Kelly, and Kate O’Halloran are the inheritors of brutal circumstances emanating from the mid-19th Century Irish famine. Their converging stories culminate in a most dramatic ending, or, for two, a new beginning.
